Grade 1A & 1B
As grade 1 teachers, we believe students should be caring and open-minded. These Learner Profile traits are key to improving their social interactions and creating a great school community. For these reasons, the classes started working together every Friday afternoon. Grade 1A and 1B are working on similar topics during their unit of inquiry, and on Fridays, both classes work in mixed groups on projects related to their Unit of Inquiry.
What have we done so far?
My Body Parts
After learning the body parts in English, students made body parts and glued them to a poster making big bodies that looked very funny.
My Body Poster
In groups of 4, the students chose to trace one student on a big piece of paper. Some students made a normal body; other students started making the skeletal system, and some even added organs to the body.
Five Senses Clay
Students were introduced to the five senses. In small groups, they made a 3D poster using air-dry clay. They showed their understanding by making things you can taste, touch, smell, hear, or see.
Five Senses Puppet Show
To become a better communicator, the students first made senses puppets and practiced their show with their group, and performed in front of both classes.
As teachers, we have seen great results. The collaboration between students is improving. During recess, students from both classes will mix and play together.
