As we continue to progress through the academic year, grade 4 have undertaken a new set of challenges. Our learners are putting entertainment under the microscope to develop their understanding of human expression in its many different forms. To explore entertainment however, we must first build upon our knowledge of storytelling. Over the past two weeks our learners have been doing just that. Through various individual and group writing activities, grade 4 have discussed plot diagrams, descriptive and sensory language, setting, character traits and how these traits impact a character’s choices and motivations.
In tandem with this, our learners have begun expanding their skills within the arts. Each week they have spent time engaging with theatre, and more specifically improvisation. This branch of the performing arts has been providing an outstanding platform for our students to become more comfortable with self-expression, spontaneity, co-operation, communication (both verbal and non-verbal) creativity and problem-solving!
In Chinese, grade 4 have been discovering another form of entertainment, poetry. By travelling through time and across the length and breadth of China, students have embraced the opportunity to explore Chinese culture by studying the works of different influential writers, such as: Libai, Bai Juyi and Su Shi. Culminating in a competition that saw students naming the poem and writing the sentence based on the mimes of their classmates, as well as a poetry ladened quiz.
Finally, in Maths, students have continued along their path to geometric mastery, reviewing different forms of triangles, properties of shapes as well as measuring and drawing angles. Most recently, they have been tackling the use of number lines, positive and negative numbers coupled with plotting ordered pairs on coordinate planes. As their grasp of numbers grows, we will be moving onto algebraic equations.
