In last week’s Chinese culture lessons, students of different grades staged rich and colorful events to celebrate the Midautumn Festival.
Grade one students learned traditions about the festival and related myths such as Hou-yi the Sun-shooter, Chang’e the Lady in the Moon, Wu Kang Chopping the Cassia Tree and Moon Hare Making Heavenly Medicine. They also made snowy moon cakes.
Grade two students learned the origin of Mid-autumn Festival, ate moon cakes and appreciated poems with illustrations about the festival.
Grade three students discussed the evolution of Mid-autumn Festival traditions and staged an unconventional “moonlight poetry contest”.
Grade four students organized cheerful class meetings with the theme of “Your Language, Our Story” , in which international teachers, led by students, learned the classic Chinese poem Quiet Night Thoughts.
Grade five students were engaged in a discussion on the influences and evolution of the traditions of festivals with a focus on their thinking and analytical skills.
These lessons are from the Mid-autumn module of the traditional festival section in the WIS Chinese Culture school-based curriculum. Upholding the school’s mission of attuning the Chinese voice to the world audience, WIS offers a special Chinese culture course which is taught this year by Ms Zhang Meihua.
The curriculum, addressing multiple aspects of Chinese cultural heritage, is dedicated to fostering a genuine love for traditional Chinese culture in students, so that they might not part with their cultural identity wherever they find their place in the world in the future.
