On March 14th, our Pi Day celebration was a perfect fusion of math and creativity, with each grade presenting a unique and engaging activity.
π(Pi), the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter—3.1415926535—goes on infinitely without repeating. Its endless decimals contain countless numbers, symbolizing infinite possibilities.
G1: Bookmark & poster
G1 students applied their understanding of length measurement in centimeters to measure leaves and make their personalized bookmarks and posters.
G2: Master of Weight Awareness
Grade 2 students further developed and tested their sense of weight by understanding mass measurement in grams and kilograms. They explored the mysteries of measurement in a fun way by weighing different toys.
G3: Baking
In the classroom, students got hands-on with cooking, sparking creativity. G3 students applied their understanding of mass measurement (grams and kilograms) by baking pies, combining hands-on learning with real-world application.
G4: Fastest car
G4 students inquired about speed measurement by applying their knowledge of length (meters) and time (seconds) to design and test their own Slingshot Cars.
G5: Beverage Mixology Challenge
G5 students took on a Beverage Mixology Challenge, applying their understanding of capacity in milliliters and liters to create unique drink mixtures.
MYP Math Knowledge Bowl Competition
In addition, the MYP hosted a very exciting math knowledge competition.
This tense and exciting math competition featured four enthusiastic student teams actively participating. Contestants were required to quickly buzz in and accurately solve a series of challenging problems covering various mathematical fields, including geometry, probability, and arithmetic, within a strictly limited timeframe, testing their knowledge reserves and on-the-spot reaction abilities.
What surprised the students even more was that, after the student competition concluded, the MYP teachers also formed two teams to participate in a special round of math knowledge competition. The teachers’ competition questions were ingeniously crafted, featuring “math knowledge” about WIS students that had the entire audience roaring with laughter.
The friendly competition not only ignited curiosity and teamwork but also showcased the incredible math skills within our school community.
A huge thank you to our teachers and students for making this day unforgettable!
